George Clooney Backs Callum Turner for James Bond as Bond 26 Casting Search Continues

George Clooney has publicly endorsed British actor Callum Turner as a strong candidate to become the next James Bond.

During a joint interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Clooney praised Turner, whom he directed in the 2023 film The Boys in the Boat. Without being prompted, Clooney said he believes the 36-year-old actor has all the qualities needed to play the iconic MI6 agent.

“I hope Callum ends up being the next Bond. I think he would be a great Bond. He’s tall and handsome and charming and British, so he’s the perfect guy to do it,” Clooney said.

The Oscar-winning actor also praised Turner’s career choices, saying he has focused on interesting projects rather than pursuing easy commercial success.

Turner, however, has remained cautious about the growing speculation surrounding the role. Speaking about the constant rumors, he described the situation as “quite amusing” and insisted he has no inside knowledge about the casting process.

“I know as much as you do — really, I know as much as you do,” Turner said. “I genuinely know nothing.”

He also joked about receiving messages from people he has not spoken to in years, all asking whether he has landed the role.

“It’s such a weird thing of something happening and nothing happening at all,” he said.

When asked directly about the possibility of becoming Bond, Turner declined to comment.

The endorsement comes as Amazon MGM Studios continues its search for Daniel Craig’s successor. The studio has confirmed that casting for the next Bond film is underway, although no official decision has been announced.

Turner is widely viewed as one of the leading contenders. Other names frequently linked to the role include Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Australian actor Jacob Elordi.

Clooney’s Own History With James Bond

Although George Clooney has never played James Bond, he came close to joining the franchise in the early 2000s.

At the time, producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson met with Clooney to discuss the possibility of him succeeding Pierce Brosnan. However, Clooney ultimately decided against pursuing the role.

Reflecting on the opportunity years later, he said he felt an American actor should not play Britain’s most famous spy.

“I thought, ‘Look, I’m an American. It doesn’t make sense,’” Clooney recalled. “I’d already ruined one franchise with Batman, so I wasn’t going to ruin another.”

Clooney has also said that Bond should be portrayed by a British or Commonwealth actor and has joked that he is now too old for the physically demanding role.

Influence on the Daniel Craig Era

Despite turning down the opportunity himself, Clooney reportedly played a role in shaping the modern Bond franchise.

Before Daniel Craig was cast in Casino Royale in 2006, there was debate about whether he fit the traditional image of Bond. Clooney is said to have supported Craig and encouraged producers to move toward a tougher, more grounded interpretation of the character.

Craig’s version of Bond went on to become one of the most successful and acclaimed in the franchise’s history.

Bond 26 Casting Race

With Amazon MGM now overseeing the future of the franchise, the search for the next 007 has intensified.

Reports indicate that acclaimed casting director Nina Gold has been brought in to help lead auditions. Director Denis Villeneuve, who is attached to the project, is reportedly seeking a younger Bond with a tougher and more physically imposing presence.

Among the actors most frequently mentioned as contenders are:

• Callum Turner (36) – Currently one of the leading names linked to the role.

• Aaron Taylor-Johnson (36) – Long considered a frontrunner after reportedly impressing in screen tests.

• Jacob Elordi (28) – Seen as a strong candidate due to his age and physical presence.

• Jack Lowden (35) – The Scottish actor has gained support thanks to his work in Slow Horses.

• Harris Dickinson (29) – Another frequently mentioned contender with growing industry recognition.

• Tom Francis (26) – A recent entrant who reportedly auditioned for the role.

• Louis Partridge (23) – Considered a possibility if the franchise chooses a much younger Bond.

• Tom Holland (30) – Reportedly remains on the studio’s wish list, though his global fame may work against him.

Looking Ahead

Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders, is reportedly working on the screenplay for Bond 26, while Villeneuve is expected to direct. Production is believed to be targeting a 2027 start, with a theatrical release currently projected for 2028.

For now, no actor has officially been selected. But with George Clooney’s endorsement and growing industry speculation, Callum Turner’s name remains firmly at the center of the conversation about who will become the next James Bond.
