In a recent interview with Out magazine, the singer, actress, and producer reflected on her connection with LGBTQ+ supporters and revealed how much their reactions influence her creative decisions.
Lopez said performing at WorldPride in Washington, D.C., in 2025 marked a turning point in her personal and professional life.
“I played Pride last year and it was, honestly, I felt like the beginning of the new chapter of my life,” Lopez said. “The LGBTQ+ community, for me, has always been a loyal and big part of my fanbase. Everything I do, as I'm doing it, I'm thinking about you.”
The 56-year-old entertainer also joked that she often wonders whether her queer fans will approve of her latest projects.
“I’m like, ‘Are the gays going to love this? It has to be more cunty! It has to be all the things or else the gays are not going to love it,’” she said. “If you don't love it, then what is it even for?”
Long History of LGBTQ+ Support
Lopez has spent decades publicly supporting LGBTQ+ causes through her music, television work, charitable efforts, and family advocacy.
One of her most notable recent appearances came when she headlined the WorldPride Music Festival in Washington, D.C., celebrating the 50th anniversary of Pride events in the nation’s capital. During her performance, she delivered a message of inclusion and equality.
“We all have the right to be who we want to be,” Lopez told the crowd. “God gave us that right and nobody can take it away.”
The event featured the debut of her Pride anthem “I’m Free,” a song that celebrates self-expression and the freedom to love openly. Lopez also performed George Michael’s classic “Freedom!” alongside the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington. Visual tributes during the performance honored LGBTQ+ pioneers, including activist Marsha P. Johnson.
Lopez additionally showcased music from her upcoming film Kiss of the Spider Woman, a musical drama centered on a gay prisoner who escapes harsh realities through fantasies inspired by classic cinema.
Advocacy Beyond the Stage
Her support for the community extends beyond live performances.
Following the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Lopez joined forces with Lin-Manuel Miranda to release the charity single “Love Make the World Go Round,” with proceeds benefiting victims and their families.
In television, Lopez served as executive producer of The Fosters, the acclaimed drama about a lesbian couple raising a blended family. The series was praised for its inclusive storytelling and authentic representation of LGBTQ+ characters and families.
Her work on The Fosters and her broader advocacy earned her the Vanguard Award at the 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, which recognizes media professionals who help increase visibility and understanding of LGBTQ+ people.
Personal Connection
Lopez has often spoken about her late aunt Myrza, who was a lesbian and faced significant challenges during a less accepting era. The actress has said her aunt’s experiences helped shape her commitment to LGBTQ+ advocacy.
She has also publicly supported gender-inclusive language and emphasized unconditional love for family members. Lopez has previously used they/them pronouns when referring to relatives and has spoken about the importance of supporting children regardless of their identity.
“Who cares?” Lopez once said when discussing the possibility of raising LGBTQ+ children. “You just love your kids and want them to be happy.”
Career Thriving in Her “Happy Era”
The comments come as Lopez enters what she has described as a new phase of her career, fueled by a growing partnership with Netflix and a diverse slate of projects.
Her latest romantic comedy, Office Romance, premiered on Netflix on June 5, 2026. The film stars Lopez as Jackie Cruz, an airline CEO whose strict workplace dating policy is challenged after she develops feelings for a talented company lawyer played by Brett Goldstein. The movie also reunites Lopez with Selena co-star Edward James Olmos nearly three decades after the beloved 1997 film.
Looking ahead, Lopez will appear in Kiss of the Spider Woman, directed by Bill Condon. The adaptation of the acclaimed Broadway musical casts her as Aurora, a glamorous movie star imagined by a gay prisoner seeking escape from political oppression.
Alongside her acting career, Lopez continues to develop projects through her Nuyorican Productions company under her ongoing collaboration with Netflix.
While she canceled a planned arena tour in 2024, Lopez has shifted her focus toward festival appearances, intimate performances, and special events, including surprise appearances at LGBTQ+ venues such as The Abbey in West Hollywood.
As she balances music, film, and television, Lopez says one thing remains constant: the influence of the LGBTQ+ community that has supported her throughout her journey.
For Lopez, that connection continues to shape both her work and the next chapter of her career.
