A Relationship That Left a Lasting Mark
Katherine LaNasa and Dennis Hopper shared a relationship that attracted considerable public attention. The two met in Los Angeles in 1987 when LaNasa was a 21-year-old professional ballerina performing with the Karole Armitage Ballet company. Hopper, then 51, was enjoying a major career resurgence following his acclaimed performance in David Lynch's Blue Velvet.
Their romance developed quickly. Despite Hopper's long history of struggles with substance abuse, he had become sober by that period of his life. Friends and visitors often described their Venice Beach home as calm and carefully managed, a stark contrast to Hopper's earlier reputation as one of Hollywood's most notorious rebels.
After roughly two years together, the couple married in June 1989. Their 31-year age difference drew significant media attention, making them one of Hollywood's most talked-about couples.
Life Together in Hollywood
While married to Hopper, LaNasa found herself immersed in elite Hollywood circles. She later recalled attending intimate gatherings hosted by actor Roddy McDowall, where guests included legends such as Lauren Bacall, Bette Davis, and Liza Minnelli.
The marriage also influenced her professional future. In 1990, LaNasa made her first onscreen appearance in Catchfire (also known as Backtrack), a film directed by Hopper and starring Jodie Foster. The experience helped inspire her transition from professional dance to acting.
That same year, the couple welcomed their son, Henry Lee Hopper, who later followed his parents into the entertainment industry.
Divorce and Separate Lives
Despite their close connection, the marriage lasted only three years. Their divorce was finalized in April 1992.
Following the separation, both moved forward with their lives. Hopper later married actress Victoria Duffy in 1996. The marriage lasted 14 years before Hopper filed for divorce in early 2010, just months before his death.
LaNasa went on to marry actor French Stewart in 1998. Their marriage ended in 2009. In 2012, she married actor Grant Show, best known for Melrose Place and the Dynasty reboot. The couple later welcomed a daughter, Eloise, in 2014.
Dennis Hopper's Final Years
Dennis Hopper was diagnosed publicly with advanced prostate cancer in October 2009, although he later disclosed that it was a recurrence of a disease first diagnosed years earlier. By that time, the cancer had spread to his bones.
His health deteriorated rapidly during his final months. Court filings related to his divorce proceedings revealed that he was too weak to continue chemotherapy treatment.
Despite his condition, Hopper made a final public appearance in March 2010 when he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
He died peacefully on May 29, 2010, at age 74 at his home in Venice, California, surrounded by family and close friends.
A memorial service and funeral were held in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico, a place that held special significance throughout his life. Friends, family members, and fellow actors attended the service, including Jack Nicholson, who described Hopper as a soulmate and lifelong friend. Hopper was buried at Jesús Nazareno Cemetery, where his grave remains a destination for admirers and fellow artists.
LaNasa's Claims of Posthumous Visits
More than a decade after Hopper's passing, LaNasa shared what she believes were encounters with his spirit.
"I do believe in ghosts," she told W Magazine. "The ghost of Dennis Hopper would not leave me alone for a really long time."
Although they had been divorced for many years, LaNasa suggested that the intimacy they once shared may have created a connection that continued beyond his death.
"We've been divorced a very long time, but I was the last wife that he'd been with that he wasn't currently divorcing, so I think that level of intimacy when you're dying is maybe only something you can do with a partner," she explained.
According to LaNasa, one of the most disturbing experiences occurred when Hopper appeared to her looking much as he did during his final public appearances.
"He came one time looking like when he was at the Academy Awards," she recalled. "He was in a wheelchair, and he fell down, and it was super upsetting."
She also described physical sensations associated with these experiences.
"He used to come over me in a sweat and I told him he had to leave me alone, and then he did," she said.
A Strange Coincidence
After telling Hopper's spirit to leave, LaNasa said she later felt guilty about her decision. On the same day she confided those feelings to someone else, she unexpectedly found herself walking a different route home.
That detour led her into an art gallery displaying Hopper's photography.
"I ran into a gallery that had all of his photographs up, and a photograph of him in the very back of the gallery with a fedora on winking at the camera," she said.
The moment felt significant to her.
After seeing the image, she believed Hopper was finally saying goodbye and allowing her to move forward.
The Final Goodbye
LaNasa said the last encounter came in a dream.
In the dream, she and Hopper were together in a cafeteria in Greece. During their conversation, Hopper delivered a reassuring message.
"We were both in a cafeteria in Greece, and he told me that he was okay and that he wasn't in pain anymore and he was good," she recalled.
After that dream, she says the visits stopped completely.
"And I never heard from him again."
