Nancy Guthrie Case Update: Arizona Authorities Review Anonymous Tip in Ongoing Kidnapping Investigation

Arizona authorities say they are aware of an anonymous tip regarding the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, but investigators have not yet received any official information from Mexican authorities.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department addressed the reports in a statement posted Thursday, saying it is monitoring claims that Guthrie's remains may be buried near the U.S.-Mexico border. Officials emphasized that the investigation remains active and that detectives will continue pursuing any credible leads.

Anonymous Tip Leads Search Near Nogales

The latest development emerged after Buscando Corazones, a volunteer organization that searches for missing persons in Mexico, told local newspaper El Imparcial that it received an anonymous call about Guthrie's possible whereabouts.

According to the tip, Guthrie's remains could be buried near a stream in the Mariposa area west of Nogales, Sonora, close to the Arizona border.

Ramona Guadalupe Ayala Ortiz, leader of the Nogales-based search collective, said volunteers searched the area but did not locate a grave connected to Guthrie. Despite the unsuccessful search, the group plans to continue examining the region.

Ortiz noted that between April and May, the organization discovered more than 25 unmarked graves containing the remains of at least 32 individuals in the Mariposa area.

Nancy Guthrie Disappearance Remains Unsolved

Nancy Guthrie was reported missing from her Catalina Foothills home near Tucson on February 1, 2026.

Investigators later shifted the case from a missing-person search to a criminal investigation after discovering signs of forced entry and blood evidence near the residence. Forensic testing confirmed that the blood belonged to Guthrie.

Authorities have said that a masked and gloved individual was captured on recovered doorbell camera footage shortly before Guthrie disappeared. The suspect allegedly disconnected the camera during the early morning hours.

The FBI has been assisting local investigators and has conducted extensive forensic and digital analysis, including efforts to recover video data and process DNA evidence collected from the scene.

DNA Evidence and Investigative Efforts Continue

One of the key pieces of evidence remains a mixed DNA sample recovered from Guthrie's home. After initial challenges analyzing the sample, investigators transferred the evidence to the FBI laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, for further examination.

Several leads have been investigated and ultimately ruled out, including DNA recovered from gloves found miles from the crime scene. Authorities determined that the DNA belonged to an individual with no connection to Guthrie's disappearance.

Law enforcement officials have also publicly stated that members of the Guthrie family have been cleared of involvement.

Scrutiny Over Investigation Handling

The investigation has drawn public attention not only because of Savannah Guthrie's prominence but also due to disagreements between local and federal officials.

FBI Director Kash Patel previously claimed federal agents were delayed in joining the investigation during its early stages. Meanwhile, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has faced criticism over aspects of the case and its management.

Despite those concerns, Nanos recently stressed that investigators are proceeding carefully while awaiting laboratory results and forensic analysis.

"This is a very sensitive case," Nanos said in a recent update, noting that scientific testing often requires significant time.

He added that authorities remain committed to ensuring that any future arrest is supported by solid evidence.

Family Continues Public Appeals

Savannah Guthrie and her family have continued to make public appeals for information regarding Nancy Guthrie's disappearance. The family has urged anyone with knowledge of the case to come forward as investigators pursue new leads.

The case remains one of Arizona's most closely watched criminal investigations, with authorities describing it as active and ongoing rather than cold.

Reward Offered for Information

A combined reward exceeding $1.1 million remains available for information that helps resolve the case.

• FBI reward: $100,000

• Guthrie family reward: $1 million
