In a heartfelt post published on Instagram and Substack, the comedian and actress described the anxiety she felt before seeing her daughter at Wisconsin’s Taycheedah Correctional Institution, where Chelsea is currently serving a prison sentence following probation violations related to drug charges.
Rosie O’Donnell Reflects on Visiting Chelsea in Prison
Rosie revealed that Chelsea had spent extended periods in lockdown, writing that her daughter was confined for most of the day and had limited access to outdoor time.
The former talk show host admitted she was nervous ahead of the visit and emotionally prepared herself for the experience.
“I’m going to visit her soon,” Rosie wrote. “I have tried to prepare myself. I know it will be difficult. But I must, as she asked me to.”
According to Rosie, Chelsea appeared stronger than expected when they met.
“My heart skips a beat. She looks good,” Rosie recalled, noting that her daughter appeared healthy, calm, and rested.
The pair were allowed only brief physical contact, with prison rules permitting a hug at the beginning and end of the visit.
Chelsea O’Donnell’s Struggles With Addiction
Chelsea O’Donnell, 28, is the adopted daughter of Rosie O’Donnell and her former partner, Kelli Carpenter. Adopted shortly after birth in 1997, Chelsea has faced years of personal challenges, including struggles with addiction and mental health issues.
Her relationship with Rosie has often been turbulent and highly publicized.
In 2015, Chelsea went missing for a week before being located safely. After turning 18, she left Rosie’s home and moved to Wisconsin to live with her biological mother, Deanna Micoley. Rosie described the visit as emotional but encouraging. She said Chelsea seemed to have adapted to prison life and told her mother that she had made friends while incarcerated.
The visit, which was expected to last four hours, ended early due to a tornado warning.
“Chelsea slumps in her chair,” Rosie wrote, explaining that visitors were rushed out of the facility as severe weather approached.
After leaving, Rosie said she spent the evening reflecting on the experience while driving through heavy storms.
“It was a big day for both of us,” she wrote.
Rosie O’Donnell Says Sobriety Gives Her Hope
Despite the difficult circumstances, Rosie expressed optimism about Chelsea’s future.
She noted that Chelsea now calls her daily and that their relationship has grown stronger during her incarceration. Rosie also said her daughter’s commitment to sobriety has given her renewed hope.
“She’s not fighting it anymore, this relationship we have,” Rosie wrote. “Her sobriety helps so much.”
Chelsea is also the mother of four children, and Rosie said the fact that they have not yet visited their mother in prison remains painful for her.
Mother-Daughter Relationship Continues to Heal
Rosie concluded her message by emphasizing the importance of forgiveness, healing, and unconditional love.
“Love and forgiveness are a must,” she wrote. “We live, we learn, we grow.”
As of June 2026, Chelsea O’Donnell remains incarcerated in Wisconsin, while Rosie continues to publicly support her recovery and look forward to her eventual release and a drug-free future.
