Speaking on the July 11 episode of the I Do, Part 2 podcast, the 52-year-old actor reflected on lessons he learned after the end of his nearly 15-year relationship with Fox, including almost 10 years of marriage.
Green admitted that he once prioritized physical attraction when entering relationships. After becoming a single father following the divorce, he sought therapy to better understand his own relationship patterns and avoid repeating past mistakes.
The actor said his experience led him to believe that friendship should come before romance. He explained that his relationship with fiancée Sharna Burgess developed naturally after the two spent time getting to know each other through long conversations before becoming romantically involved.
Green said building a relationship on trust, honesty and friendship created a stronger foundation. He and Burgess were open about both their strengths and flaws from the beginning, which helped strengthen their bond.
He also warned that relationships based mainly on physical attraction often struggle to last, saying lasting partnerships require a deeper emotional connection.
Green and Fox met in 2004 while filming Hope & Faith and married in 2010. They share three sons before finalizing their divorce in 2020. Green is now engaged to Burgess, with whom he shares a son, while Fox has since welcomed a daughter with MGK.
