Collin Gosselin says he believes mother Kate sent him away to protect her image

Collin Gosselin says he believes his mother, Kate Gosselin, sent him to a behavioral institution at age 11 because he questioned filming for the family's reality TV shows and no longer wanted to appear on camera.

In an interview with The U.S. Sun, published in full on June 27, the 22-year-old said he thinks his resistance to filming and his questions about continuing Kate Plus 8 after his parents' divorce led to the decision.

Collin also said Kate visited him only once during the 22 months he spent at the facility. He described feeling isolated, heavily medicated and blamed for family problems. He has previously said he did not know where he was being taken when he left home.

Collin has repeatedly accused his mother of mistreatment, including in a 2023 episode of Dark Side of the 2000s, where he alleged she sent him away to stop him from talking about what happened at home. His father, Jon Gosselin, has supported many of his claims and has said he spent significant money to secure Collin's release from treatment.

Kate Gosselin has denied the allegations. In a 2023 statement, she said Collin had received multiple psychiatric diagnoses and was placed in a treatment facility after years of outpatient care failed to meet his needs. She said the decision was made for the safety of the family and described her son's account as inaccurate.

Jon later rejected Kate's statement, pointing to a 2018 court decision that granted him temporary sole legal and physical custody of Collin.

Collin's memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, is scheduled for release on Oct. 13. According to its publisher, the book details his experiences growing up in the spotlight and his time in treatment.

Kate has remained active on TikTok. After receiving a supportive comment on a recent video, she replied, "I'm fine. Nothing surprises me anymore in that department."
