Evan Rachel Wood says she is disappointed not to return for Practical Magic 2

Evan Rachel Wood has said she is disappointed she was not asked to return for Practical Magic 2, despite offering to reprise her role.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of FX's The Shards, Wood said the sequel's approach made her return unlikely because it does not closely follow Alice Hoffman's novel. She added that she was saddened to miss the chance to reunite with the original cast.

Wood played Kylie, the daughter of Sandra Bullock's character Sally Owens, in the 1998 film. Joey King has been cast as Kylie in the sequel, while Maisie Williams will play Antonia, originally portrayed by Alexandra Artrip.

Wood said she wished the new cast well and hoped King enjoyed the experience, adding that she still has fond memories of making the original film.

In July 2025, Wood revealed on social media that she had offered to return, even for a brief appearance, but was told the role would be recast.

Original cast member Aidan Quinn, who played Gary Hallet, has also said he was not invited back, although he said he would have accepted if asked and spoke warmly about working with Bullock and Nicole Kidman.

Practical Magic 2 reunites Bullock, Kidman, Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest. Set 25 years after the first film, the story follows the Owens family as Sally's daughter uncovers family secrets and new magical powers, forcing the family to confront the origins of their curse.

The sequel is scheduled for release in cinemas on 11 September 2026.
