Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s widow sues trustee of his estate over trust dispute

Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s widow has filed two lawsuits against his mother, saying the late actor intended to provide financial support for his wife and daughter but an older trust does not reflect those wishes.

Tenisha Warner filed the cases in California and Georgia against Pamela Warner, who serves as successor trustee of the Warner Family Trust.

According to the lawsuits, Tenisha is seeking about $1.2 million from the trust. She says she is owed $1 million related to life insurance, about $50,500 in anniversary payments, $30,500 tied to a Roth IRA, and $195,000 in salary she says was owed for her work as Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s chief of staff.

The lawsuits argue that the trust, created in 1996, divides Warner’s estate among his mother, father and half-sister, leaving his widow and their 9-year-old daughter without adequate financial support. Tenisha says Warner was working to replace the decades-old estate plan before his death.

In a statement, Tenisha said she had spent the past year trying to settle the estate privately but filed the lawsuits before legal deadlines expired. She said Warner intended to provide for her and their daughter and that she is now raising their child as a single parent.

Warner, best known for playing Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, died on July 20, 2025, after accidentally drowning during a family vacation in Costa Rica.

A day before the lawsuits became public, Pamela Warner posted an Instagram tribute marking one year since her son’s death. In the post, she described the past year as one of pain and loss and wrote that she had learned “how cruel, evil and greedy a human can be,” while also expressing gratitude for those who had supported her. She did not name anyone in the post. The legal dispute remains pending.
