In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said the filmmakers first developed Peter Parker's story before deciding which character Sink would play. He said Sink's casting helped confirm the choice.
The role has not been officially revealed, but many fans believe Sink could be playing Jean Grey from the X-Men. Sink previously said she was surprised by the rumours before she joined the project.
Set photos and trailers have also led to theories that Sink is the mysterious hooded figure who appears to control other characters' minds, including Hulk and Scorpion, while confronting Spider-Man.
Producer Amy Pascal said the film explores themes of identity, fitting in, and accepting what makes someone different. Feige praised Sink's performance, saying she fits perfectly with the cast.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens in cinemas with preview screenings on Thursday.
