In a statement shared on Instagram, the family said Neill died peacefully while surrounded by loved ones.
"It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia," the statement said.
The family added that his death was sudden and unexpected but took comfort in the fact that he had successfully overcome cancer and remained cancer-free until the end of his life. They also thanked the medical staff at St Vincent's Private Hospital for their care and asked for privacy as they mourned.
