Andrew Garfield Admits He’s Addicted to His Phone Despite Avoiding Social Media

Andrew Garfield has admitted that, despite not having public social media accounts, he is heavily addicted to his phone.

Speaking to Variety, the actor revealed that he secretly uses Instagram and often gets drawn into content about unusual ceramics and Japanese craftspeople. He said his screen-time reports are “horrific” and that he feels he has wasted hours on his phone.

Garfield believes technology companies have designed platforms to encourage addictive behavior. He said one simple way to reduce phone use is to leave the device in another room.

His comments come as he promotes The Magic Faraway Tree, a film about children who are addicted to technology. Garfield said the movie does not argue that technology is inherently bad, but instead encourages people to develop a healthier relationship with it.

Garfield is also starring in Artificial, Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. He said he is interested in how people can balance the benefits of new technology with staying connected to themselves, each other and the natural world.

The actor said this tension is especially important as technology becomes an increasingly central part of everyday life.
