Courtney Love Opens Up About Near-Fatal Health Battle

Courtney Love has revealed that she nearly died after becoming seriously ill during a trip to the UK in 2019.

The 62-year-old rocker opened up about the frightening experience in an Instagram video, saying her health suddenly deteriorated and that she spent a great deal of time in hospitals.

“My body just exploded, and I was in hospitals a lot. I almost died,” Love said.

The Hole frontwoman said she lost all her hair and her weight dropped to around 100 pounds. Doctors warned her that she could die, but Love admitted that she struggled to believe them.

She connected her reaction to a long-standing habit of questioning what adults told her while growing up. Looking back, she said she eventually realized that she had to trust her own understanding of what was happening to her.

Love did not reveal what illness caused her health crisis. She said, however, that she “somehow” recovered and is now healthy.

“I’m fine now,” she told fans, adding that she was not ready to publicly discuss her illness while she was going through it.

The singer also used the video to address her return to music. She asked fans to be patient as she works out how and when to release her next record.

Love said she made the album while she was frequently in the hospital. At the time, she believed it might be her final record, so she decided to make the music she had always wanted to make.

“When I made it, I believed this was my last record,” she wrote in the caption. “I made the record I always wanted to make.”

Despite everything she experienced, Love said she is eager to perform again. “I want to tour more than anything,” she wrote. “And I want to sing.”

Love’s most recent album was 2010’s Nobody’s Daughter, released under the Hole name. She has remained relatively private about her health in the years since her 2019 illness.

In March 2025, Love also revealed that she had permanently moved to England, citing her desire to leave the United States during President Donald Trump’s second term.

Now, with her health improved and new music on the way, Love says she is preparing to return to public life on her own terms.

“I’m not going to tell people red is blue anymore,” she said, ending her message with a request for patience and understanding as she prepares to “enter the world again.”
