Dave Bautista Becomes the New Kratos in Amazon’s ‘God of War’

Dave Bautista is officially stepping into one of gaming’s most iconic roles. The actor has been cast as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming live-action series based on the hit “God of War” video game franchise.

Bautista takes over the role from Ryan Hurst, who was announced as Kratos in January 2026. Hurst suffered a torn bicep while filming, requiring surgery and forcing production to face a lengthy delay. Amazon and Sony subsequently decided to recast the character.

The series has received a two-season order, with both seasons expected to film back-to-back. Production originally began in Vancouver in February and is now expected to resume in the coming weeks. Because Hurst had already filmed scenes, those sequences will need to be shot again with Bautista.

Bautista is considered a strong fit for the role, particularly because of the physical demands of playing Kratos. The character is known for his powerful build and intense fighting style, while Bautista has spent much of his career maintaining an imposing physique. His experience as a professional wrestler before becoming a Hollywood actor also gives him a natural connection to the character’s physical presence.

The series will be based on the stories of the two most recent “God of War” games, which move the franchise from Greek mythology into the world of Norse gods. The story follows Kratos as he raises his 10-year-old son, Atreus, while confronting powerful gods and enemies.

According to the series’ official logline, Kratos and Atreus set out to spread the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. During their journey, Kratos tries to teach his son how to become a better god, while Atreus pushes his father to become a better human.

Callum Vinson remains attached to play Atreus. The supporting cast includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.

Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, executive producer and showrunner. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes.

The series is being produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Executive producers include Moore, Maril Davis, “God of War” creator Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia and Ben McGinnis are co-executive producers.

With Bautista now officially leading the series, Amazon’s “God of War” is moving forward with a major change to its central character. Production is expected to restart soon, bringing the highly anticipated adaptation one step closer to its Prime Video debut.
