Dwayne Johnson Responds to Critics of Live-Action ‘Moana’

Dwayne Johnson is taking the mixed reviews of Disney’s live-action “Moana” in stride.

The actor, who returns as the voice of Maui in the remake, recently spoke to People about the film’s disappointing reception from critics. “Moana” currently holds a 31% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Johnson said the response was initially encouraging. “Our first two reviews came out,” he recalled. “They were amazing. I was like, ‘Wow.’” But the reviews soon became more negative.

For Johnson, the criticism was difficult, but he and his wife, Lauren Hashian, tried to keep things in perspective. The couple reportedly talked about the film late at night after their children had gone to sleep.

“The challenge was, ‘OK, let’s remember, though, what’s going to be beyond this opening weekend,’” Johnson said. He added that they focused on looking past the immediate criticism and the “noise” surrounding the movie.

Despite the reviews, Johnson said he remains proud of the film and is happy that it has brought enjoyment to audiences.

“If you love it, great. If you don’t, no problem,” he said.

The critical response has also been accompanied by weaker-than-expected box office results. During Disney’s Aug. 5 earnings call, newly appointed CEO Josh D’Amaro acknowledged that the live-action “Moana” had a soft theatrical performance.

D’Amaro nevertheless argued that Disney’s major franchises can benefit the company in other ways, even when a movie does not meet expectations at the box office. He pointed to “The Mandalorian and Grogu” and “Moana” as examples of films that can help drive value across Disney’s wider business.

The film’s financial performance could become a bigger concern. “Moana” is projected to lose at least $100 million during its theatrical run, according to estimates.

For Johnson, however, the movie’s value is not measured entirely by reviews or ticket sales. The actor appears determined to let audiences decide for themselves whether the remake succeeds.

With the critical debate continuing, “Moana” now faces the bigger challenge of proving whether its appeal can extend beyond its opening weeks and turn a disappointing theatrical run into a longer-term win for Disney.
