Gladys Knight to Cut Back on Performances Amid Health Concerns

Singer Gladys Knight, 82, says she will reduce her number of performances as she enters what she calls a “new era” in her life and career.

In a statement Thursday, Knight said she plans to spend more time with her husband, William McDowell, and her grandchildren while focusing on other projects. She also thanked fans for supporting her throughout her 75-year career.

The announcement follows reports that some of Knight’s recent performances raised concerns among audience members and tour staff. During an Aug. 18 show in Detroit, she reportedly took several breaks and appeared tired. At a July 25 performance at the Hollywood Bowl, she appeared to lose her place while singing “Midnight Train to Georgia” and briefly began leaving the stage.

Concerns were also reported after a Las Vegas performance in April. Sources told TMZ that staff worried Knight might be showing signs of dementia. McDowell denied that Knight has been diagnosed with dementia and said she would undergo a medical evaluation. He said she has “good days and bad” but still wants to perform.

Knight is currently scheduled to perform through November, with her next show set for Sept. 4 at the Riverfront Jazz Festival in Dallas.

The singer has also faced family-related controversy. Her son, Shanga Hankerson, accused McDowell last year of emotionally and financially abusing Knight and pressuring her to perform. Knight rejected those claims at the time, saying her health and performances had been misrepresented.

Knight, who began performing with the Pips at age 7, has won seven Grammy Awards and is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She has also received a Kennedy Center Honor.
