Gwyneth Paltrow Fires Back at Backlash Over Reported Sam Altman Dinner

Gwyneth Paltrow is pushing back against criticism over a reported private dinner for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at her home in the Hamptons.

The controversy began after journalist Matthew Belloni reported in his Puck newsletter that invitations were being sent for a “private, off-the-record al fresco dinner at her home in honor of Sam Altman.” The invitation quickly spread online, prompting criticism of the actress and Goop founder.

Some social media users described Paltrow as “tone-deaf” and a “villain.” Comedian and activist Matt Bernstein also posted a video criticizing Paltrow’s connections to the artificial intelligence industry, calling them part of what he described as “technofascism.”

Paltrow responded to the uproar on Instagram on Thursday, Aug. 20. Instead of directly defending the reported dinner, she appeared to mock the controversy by sharing several altered versions of the invitation.

In her versions, the dinner was supposedly being held in honor of fictional or pop-culture characters, including “M3GAN,” “Samantha Jones,” “SHREK” and “Jessica Rabbit.” Another version honored “Chanty Beluga,” a character created by comedian Courtney O’Donnell that has recently become a viral internet sensation.

Alongside the posts, Paltrow joked: “We’re serving swordfish burritos, cheddar foam lattes on request.”

The authenticity of the original invitation has also been questioned. Journalist Shayan Sardarizadeh wrote on X that the invitation was “likely AI-generated,” adding another layer to the online debate.

The incident is not the first time Paltrow has leaned into an internet controversy. In 2025, she became the temporary spokesperson for Astronomer, the technology company that found itself at the center of a viral scandal after two executives were filmed embracing at a Coldplay concert. Paltrow’s connection to the story attracted additional attention because she was previously married to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.

Paltrow has also recently discussed technology and defense issues. In June, she hosted billionaire military technology entrepreneur Trae Stephens on her Goop podcast. Their conversation covered artificial intelligence, defense technology and the future of America’s military capabilities.

The latest controversy appears to have given Paltrow another opportunity to turn an internet storm into a joke. Whether the original dinner invitation was genuine or AI-generated, her response made clear that she was willing to play along with the attention rather than let the criticism go unanswered.
