Jake Reiner Opens Up About Parents’ Deaths and Brother’s Murder Case

Jake Reiner has spoken publicly for the first time since the deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, eight months ago.

In an interview with KABC-TV’s Mark Cota-Robles, Jake described the period since their deaths as both long and immediate. “It’s been 8 months. It feels like 8 years at the same time. And it also feels like 8 minutes,” he said.

Jake recalled learning about the tragedy from his sister Romy. “Romy told me our dad was dead and then she said, ‘I can’t find mom,’” he said.

His younger brother, Nick Reiner, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths. Prosecutors allege that Nick stabbed Rob and Michele inside their Brentwood home on Dec. 14, 2025. He has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody without bail.

Jake said his family has been deeply affected by Nick’s arrest. “I physically lost my parents. And then Nick was arrested. And now it’s me and Romy,” he said.

Jake and Romy recently testified before the grand jury that indicted their brother. Prosecutors also allege that the killings involved lying in wait and the use of a knife. Nick is scheduled to appear in court for a pretrial hearing on Sept. 15.

Since their parents’ deaths, Jake and Romy have worked to preserve their legacy. Jake spoke about his work with the Children’s Institute, which created the Michele and Rob Reiner Champion for Change Award. Actress Jamie Lee Curtis, a longtime family friend, will be the award’s first recipient.

Jake previously wrote about his grief in an April Substack essay, calling his life since the deaths a “living nightmare.” He wrote that his parents would miss important moments in his future, including his wedding and the birth of a future grandchild.
