Jenna Fischer Finds a New Balance After The Office

After nine seasons as Pam Beesly on the hit sitcom “The Office,” Jenna Fischer discovered that life as a full-time television actress no longer fit the life she wanted.

Fischer returned to television in 2018 with the ABC comedy “Splitting Up Together.” Although she loved working with the cast, the demanding schedule became difficult to manage while raising her two young children.

Speaking on the “Dinner’s On Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson” podcast, Fischer said she was working about 65 to 70 hours a week.

“The hours were so intense,” she recalled. “It was, like, really, really hard, and my kids were very small.”

The experience changed how Fischer viewed her career. She decided that being the lead, or even a regular cast member, on a television series was no longer right for her.

When “Splitting Up Together” was canceled, Fischer found a new opportunity alongside her longtime friend and former “The Office” co-star Angela Kinsey. The two launched the “Office Ladies” podcast, where they revisit episodes of the beloved sitcom and share stories from behind the scenes.

Podcasting gave Fischer something her television career could not: greater control over her schedule.

She said the podcast provided a steady income while allowing her to be present for important moments in her children’s lives. She could attend school drop-offs and pickups, teacher conferences, concerts and other activities without having to ask someone else for permission.

“I was now at every school drop-off, every school pickup, every teacher conference, every concert,” Fischer said. “I didn’t have to beg someone to go to the Halloween parade.”

Fischer described the change as becoming “the agent of my own time” and “the architect of my own time.”

Her decision to prioritize family later became even more significant. In December 2023, Fischer was diagnosed with Stage 1 triple-positive breast cancer. She publicly shared the news in October 2024, explaining that an inconclusive mammogram led to additional testing.

Fischer underwent a lumpectomy in January 2024, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. She said the cancer was caught early and had not spread to her lymph nodes or other parts of her body.

Later in 2024, Fischer announced that she was cancer-free.

For the actress, stepping away from traditional television work was not the end of her career. Instead, it opened the door to a different kind of professional life—one that allowed her to earn a living while having more control over her time and being present for her family.
