Jennifer Garner Says Rejection Led Her to Her Breakthrough Role in ‘Alias’

Jennifer Garner says she has learned to view rejection as part of an actor’s career—and sometimes as a sign that something better is ahead.

During an appearance on Aspire with Emma Grede, the 54-year-old actress recalled losing roles she strongly wanted. She said she has faced many auditions where she made it to the final stages but still did not get the part.

Garner remembered especially wanting a role on The West Wing. After losing it, she traveled alone to Palm Springs for a few days to clear her head. About two weeks later, she was offered the role of Sydney Bristow on Alias, the ABC spy drama that became her breakthrough.

“Rejection is God’s protection?” Garner said. “Whatever that is, I’m all for that.”

Alias ran for five seasons from 2001 to 2006. Garner recently reflected on the show’s ending, saying she will “never forget the day we wrapped.” She also said she has never watched the final episode because Victor Garber’s character dies, making it too emotional for her to revisit.

Garner said her ability to “shake it off” has helped her continue working despite disappointment.
