‘Don’t Ignore Anything’: The Office Star Lucy Davis Reveals Stage 4 Breast Cancer Diagnosis

British actress Lucy Davis, best known for playing Dawn Tinsley in the hit sitcom The Office, has revealed that she has been living with incurable stage 4 breast cancer for the past year and a half.

The 53-year-old actress shared the news with her followers on Instagram, explaining that the cancer has spread to her bones, including her spine, right hip and ribs.

Davis said the cancer was discovered after she noticed what she described as a very small, hard area rather than an obvious lump.

“I almost didn’t bother getting it checked,” she said, urging others not to ignore unusual changes in their bodies.

“Don’t ignore anything – get everything checked out,” she added.

Davis explained that her cancer is now incurable and that it is too late for chemotherapy. According to Cancer Research UK, stage 4 breast cancer occurs when cancer that began in the breast has spread to another part of the body. Although it cannot currently be cured, treatment can sometimes control the disease for several years.

Despite her diagnosis, Davis said she is determined to make the most of the time she has left.

“As of now, I’m trying to live out whatever might be left of my life in as fun a way as I possibly can,” she said.

The actress also spoke openly about the physical impact of the illness. She said standing and walking for long periods can be difficult and that she sometimes needs to use a wheelchair.

But humour, she explained, has been one of the things helping her cope.

Davis said she had asked her friends and family to continue making fun of her and, most importantly, not to treat her as though she were a sick person.

“There’s nothing that will make you feel more unwell than being treated as if you’re unwell,” she said.

Davis also said she is not afraid of what comes next and feels at peace with her situation. Reflecting on the death of her dog Gracie in 2024, she said she believes she will see her again sooner than expected.

The actress ended her message by offering support to others facing cancer, acknowledging the physical and emotional demands of the disease.

“Cancer asks a lot from us, physically and mentally,” she said. “And we all get to do it however we choose.”

Despite her illness, Davis said she plans to continue campaigning for animal rights and hopes to keep acting, describing the profession as one of the biggest joys of her life.

She also shared a video of herself ringing a bell traditionally used in cancer treatment centres to mark the end of treatment. She read a rhyme often associated with the ceremony: “Ring this bell three times well. It’s a toll to clearly say my treatments are done, the course is run, and I am on my way.”

Davis became widely known for playing receptionist Dawn Tinsley in The Office, the acclaimed BBC comedy created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The series, which ran from 2001 to 2003, followed the everyday lives of employees at the fictional Wernham Hogg paper company in Slough.

Her character’s slow-burning romance with Martin Freeman’s Tim Canterbury became one of the show’s most memorable storylines.

Davis has also appeared in the comedy film Shaun of the Dead and played Hayley Jordan in the long-running BBC Radio 4 drama The Archers.

Her candid announcement has prompted an outpouring of support from fans, while her message about checking even small or unusual changes is likely to resonate with many people.
