Mahershala Ali Says He Has Moved On From Marvel’s Blade

Mahershala Ali says he is no longer involved with Marvel Studios' long-delayed Blade reboot.

In an interview with GQ, the Oscar-winning actor said the project is no longer part of his future. "If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it," Ali said, adding that he has moved on and does not want to keep answering questions about the film.

Marvel announced Ali as the new Blade in 2019, but the movie faced repeated delays and changes in directors and writers. Aside from a brief voice cameo in Eternals (2021), Ali never appeared as the character.

Instead, Ali reunited with former Blade director Bassam Tariq for the new film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. He said the original movie better matches the kind of work he wants to be known for and that he prefers creating new stories over remakes.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently said he was disappointed the Blade project never moved forward. He explained that the studio did not feel it had a script strong enough to begin filming and did not want to compromise the quality of the movie.

Ali’s new film, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, is scheduled to be released in theaters on Sept. 25.
