The actor, who recently played Superman villain Lex Luthor, has been cast as the charismatic but famously self-obsessed Defense Against the Dark Arts professor in HBO’s upcoming second season of Harry Potter. Hoult takes over the role previously played by Kenneth Branagh in 2002’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
The new season is expected to premiere in late 2027, with Dominic McLaughlin continuing as young Harry Potter. Hoult’s casting adds a fun twist to his long history with the franchise: 25 years ago, he auditioned to play Harry himself and later tried out for Draco Malfoy — but landed neither role.
Now, after two decades and a few failed auditions, Hoult is finally getting his Hogwarts acceptance letter.
