Sandra Bullock Opens Up About the Private Grief of Losing Bryan Randall

Sandra Bullock is speaking publicly about the grief she experienced while caring for her longtime partner, Bryan Randall, during his private battle with ALS.

Randall, a photographer, died in August 2023 at age 57 after living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive disease that affects nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. Bullock and Randall had been together since 2015 and kept his diagnosis largely out of the public eye at his request.

During an appearance on the SmartLess podcast, Bullock described Randall’s diagnosis as “traumatic.” She said he asked her and his family not to reveal his illness, leaving her with very few people to turn to for support.

“He asked me not to share. I know why he asked me not to,” Bullock said, according to reports about the episode. She explained that she was not even allowed to tell close friends about what the family was going through. For a time, her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, was the only person outside the immediate family who knew.

The secrecy made an already difficult period even harder. Bullock was caring for Randall during the COVID-19 pandemic while also helping their children cope with his declining health. She described the situation as a “trifecta that was pretty dark.”

Eventually, Bullock was able to confide in friends, including Amanda Anka and Jennifer Aniston. By then, however, she had already begun to understand that Randall was unlikely to survive the disease.

“I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,” Bullock said. “There was something that had shifted.”

She explained that, emotionally, she felt she had lost the person she knew before his death.

“My person left a lot earlier than the body left,” she said. “I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill.”

Randall’s family also kept his ALS journey private. Following his death, they thanked the doctors and nurses who cared for him and asked the public to respect their privacy as they mourned.

Bullock first met Randall in 2015 when he photographed her son Louis’ birthday party. Their relationship became public later that year, and they were eventually seen together at Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux’s wedding.

In 2021, Bullock spoke warmly about their relationship during an appearance on Red Table Talk, saying, “I found the love of my life. It’s the best thing ever.”

Her latest comments offer a rare glimpse into the years of caregiving, secrecy and anticipatory grief that preceded Randall’s death, and the emotional impact that continued long after he was gone.
