The actress, who portrayed Bessette opposite Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr., recently opened up about the scene that has stayed with her long after filming ended.
“I find different scenes popping into my head all the time,” Pidgeon told Vogue Singapore in an interview published August 31. But one episode, in particular, left a lasting impression.
A haunting look inside Carolyn’s home
Pidgeon said she especially loved filming Episode 8, titled “Exit Strategy.” The entire episode takes place inside the couple’s Tribeca apartment and explores Carolyn’s growing sense of isolation as media attention around her becomes overwhelming.
Director Jesse Peretz chose to show the passage of time through a series of quiet scenes featuring Carolyn alone at home.
In one striking sequence, Pidgeon’s Carolyn moves through the couple’s stylish loft, smoking cigarettes and staring into space while k.d. lang’s “Smoke Rings” plays in the background.
For Pidgeon, the stillness of the scenes helped her understand Carolyn’s emotional state.
“Finding new parts of the apartment we hadn’t seen before and finding different physicality to convey her sense of feeling trapped was a refreshing way to enter the headspace needed to start that episode,” she explained.
She also praised the episode’s visual style, saying the shots were beautiful because of their “stillness.”
Carolyn’s struggle with the spotlight
“Exit Strategy” depicts Carolyn struggling to leave her home as paparazzi and media attention become increasingly intrusive.
The episode also explores the pressure on her marriage to JFK Jr. and dramatizes the couple’s reaction to the death of Princess Diana, who was being pursued by photographers when the car carrying her crashed in Paris in 1997.
The storyline highlights one of the central themes of the series: the intense public attention surrounding JFK Jr. and Carolyn and the effect it had on their private lives.
Pidgeon was nervous about playing Carolyn
Taking on the role was not an easy decision for Pidgeon.
The actress recalled being stunned when she learned she had been cast.
“Complete and total silence, brought on by shock,” she said of her initial reaction.
Pidgeon understood the responsibility that came with portraying Carolyn Bessette, a woman whose life and legacy have continued to attract public interest decades after her death.
“I understood the magnitude and weight that Carolyn’s legacy carries and I wanted to do her justice,” she said, admitting that she was “frightened and nervous” about taking on the role.
At the same time, the opportunity motivated her to learn as much as possible about Carolyn and try to understand the woman behind the public image.
“I have so much admiration for what she was able to accomplish and experience in her life,” Pidgeon said. She described the chance to portray Carolyn as “an incredible gift.”
The role has already brought major recognition for the actress. Pidgeon received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her performance.
‘Love Story’ earns multiple Emmy nominations
Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette has also received several other Emmy nominations.
The series was recognized for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, as well as Outstanding Period Costumes, Outstanding Casting for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and Outstanding Period or Fantasy/Sci-Fi Makeup (Non-Prosthetic).
Constance Zimmer was also nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her portrayal of Carolyn’s mother, Ann Marie Messina.
The 2026 Emmy Awards are scheduled to air September 14 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC.
