Shelley Fabares’ Cause of Death Revealed After Actress Dies at 82

Actress Shelley Fabares, best known for her roles on The Donna Reed Show and Coach, died Aug. 22 at age 82. Her family has confirmed that pneumonia was the cause of death, according to PEOPLE.

Fabares’ family announced her death the following day, saying she was surrounded by loved ones. They remembered her as a devoted wife, stepmother, family member and friend who brought warmth, humor and comfort to those around her.

Fabares had faced serious health problems before her death. She was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis, a condition in which the immune system attacks the liver, and underwent a liver transplant in 2000.

Friends and former costars have since paid tribute to the actress. Craig T. Nelson, her costar and onscreen love interest on Coach, described Fabares as “a great and grand lady” and “an extraordinary woman.” He said she was a source of advice and support during their nearly decade-long run on the series.

Barbara Eden, who worked with Fabares on Ride the Wild Surf, also remembered her fondly, calling her a “dear sweet Shelley” and praising her kindness and positive spirit.

Fabares is survived by her husband, actor Mike Farrell, and two stepchildren.
