Directed by Paul Greengrass, the film is set during England’s Peasants’ Revolt of 1381. Garfield stars alongside Jamie Bell, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Katherine Waterston and Stephen Dillane.
Recent promotional clips released on social media describe the film as The Uprising: The Rise of Robin Hood and show Garfield as a masked, green-cloaked archer. One trailer says: “To the rich, he was an outlaw. To the people, he was a hero. Witness the birth of a legend.”
The film’s website also says the real events of the 1381 uprising “helped inspire the legend of Robin Hood.” Earlier marketing, however, made no mention of Robin Hood and focused entirely on the historical rebellion against King Richard II.
The UK distributor, Entertainment Film Distributors, has denied that the film is a Robin Hood movie. “The Uprising is a historical epic about the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, not Robin Hood,” the company said, adding that Robin Hood references appearing in marketing from other countries were not approved by the UK distributor.
The confusion has also raised questions about Garfield’s character. He was widely expected to play Wat Tyler, the leader of the Peasants’ Revolt, but reports now suggest Cosmo Jarvis may be playing Tyler, while Garfield portrays a character who helped inspire the Robin Hood legend.
Historically, Robin Hood is usually associated with the reigns of Richard the Lionheart and King John, roughly two centuries before the Peasants’ Revolt. However, the earliest Robin Hood stories emerged later, leaving some room for filmmakers to connect the legend with other medieval rebellions.
The film was originally announced in 2022 under the title The Hood, before being renamed The Rage and eventually The Uprising.
The Uprising is scheduled to open in US cinemas on September 11 and in the UK on October 9.
