Tom Holland Says New Spider-Man Suit Finally Fixed a Major Problem

Tom Holland has revealed that the updated Spider-Man suit in Spider-Man: Brand New Day is much more practical than the versions he wore in earlier films.

Speaking to IMDb, Holland said the hardest part of wearing the suit was the smell after spending up to 12 hours filming action scenes. He joked that long days of jumping, crouching and moving around in the costume made it far from glamorous.

During pre-production, Holland said he tried on Spider-Man suits worn by Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and his own earlier versions. He worked with director Destin Daniel Cretton and the costume team to combine features they liked from the previous designs as a tribute to the earlier films.

Holland also explained that Maguire’s and Garfield’s suits were easier to manage because they had zippers that allowed the actors to remove parts of the costume and use the bathroom. For the first time, Holland said his new suit lets him comfortably use the bathroom and remove his mask to drink water during filming.

The redesigned mask also benefits filming. Holland said its new lenses allow cameras to capture his eyes through the mask in certain lighting, making Spider-Man appear more expressive and human. Zendaya added that she liked the suit’s natural wrinkles and movement, saying its imperfections made it feel more realistic.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in cinemas.
