Gunfire Reported Near Tupac Shakur Trial Courthouse as Family Returns to Hear Testimony

LAS VEGAS — A heavy police response unfolded near the Las Vegas courthouse Tuesday after reports of gunfire came in shortly after Tupac Shakur’s family left for lunch during the second day of the trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis.

Davis, 63, is charged with murder in connection with Shakur’s 1996 killing. Prosecutors say the shooting was carried out as retaliation after Shakur’s entourage attacked Davis’ nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, at the MGM Grand earlier that night.

The reported gunfire occurred just moments after Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, and his brother, Mopreme Shakur, left the courthouse.

Sekyiwa paused outside the building and thanked PEOPLE for covering the long-running case.

“Thank you so much for being here,” she said. “For covering this. Thank you.”

Soon afterward, several police officers were seen running down the street as additional officers and patrol vehicles arrived in downtown Las Vegas. Witnesses reported seeing at least one officer carrying a large weapon.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said it received several calls shortly after 1 p.m. about possible shots fired inside a business in the 500 block of Casino Center Boulevard, near Bonneville Street.

Officers searched the area but did not find a victim or confirm that a shooting had occurred. KLAS reported that dispatchers told officers the suspected gunfire came from inside a nearby Starbucks.

Police said the investigation was continuing. The incident did not interrupt the trial, and no serious injuries were reported.

Earlier Tuesday, jurors watched surveillance footage from the MGM Grand showing the confrontation involving Anderson. The video showed several people surrounding and kicking a man on the ground before Shakur and members of his entourage moved quickly through the casino.

Security officers and police were later seen speaking with Anderson, who was wearing a No. 13 Dan Marino Miami Dolphins jersey.

Hours later, Shakur was shot while riding in a black BMW with Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight. Investigators have said a white Cadillac carrying Davis, Anderson and two other men pulled alongside the BMW.

Davis is not accused of firing the shots.

Former Las Vegas police officer Dean O’Kelley also testified Tuesday. He recalled finding several shell casings at the shooting scene and receiving information that the suspect vehicle was a white Cadillac occupied by as many as four Black men.

O’Kelley said he searched areas he knew from his work in the department’s gang unit in an effort to locate the vehicle.

Jurors were also shown graphic autopsy photographs as a forensic pathologist described Shakur’s injuries and the extensive attempts doctors made to save him after he was shot.

The family later returned to the courthouse to hear testimony from James McDonald, a former associate of Knight and Reggie Wright Jr., who was head of security for Death Row Records when Shakur was killed.

Both men have testified about their knowledge of the people and events surrounding the shooting.

Davis has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors are expected to call more than 200 witnesses during a trial that could last about a month.

Knight and members of Shakur’s family are among those expected to testify as the long-awaited case moves forward.
