Will Smith Returns to the Big Screen With New Thriller ‘Supermax’

Will Smith is back on a movie set.

The 57-year-old Oscar winner was recently spotted filming his new thriller, Supermax, in Sydney, Australia. Smith was photographed on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at the Western Sydney Hotel, where he was shooting scenes for the upcoming film.

For the shoot, Smith wore a metallic copper tracksuit with a white T-shirt and Nike Jordans.

Supermax is being produced by Smith’s company, Westbrook, in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax. The film is directed by David Gordon Green, known for movies including Halloween and The Exorcist: Believer. David Weil and David J. Rosen wrote the screenplay and are also executive producers.

The movie follows two FBI agents investigating a murder inside the most secure prison in the world. The story has been described as a fast-paced thriller packed with unexpected twists.

Smith plays the lead character, Rex. He stars alongside AnnaSophia Robb and Jaafar Jackson. Robb plays an FBI agent who works with Rex.

Robb confirmed her role on Instagram in July, writing that she was “Extremely grateful. Extremely pumped. Extremely ready to kick some a$$.”

Supermax is Smith’s first movie since 2024’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, in which he reunited with longtime friend Martin Lawrence. The action-comedy was a major box-office success, earning $193.5 million in North America and finishing as the 11th highest-grossing movie there in 2024.

While Smith has not filmed another movie since Bad Boys: Ride or Die, he has remained busy on television. Earlier in 2026, he hosted National Geographic’s Pole to Pole with Will Smith, a travel series that followed the actor as he took on extreme challenges around the world.

The series showed Smith skiing to the South Pole, catching a giant anaconda, handling a venomous tarantula and diving beneath the ice near the North Pole.

He also made a surprise appearance in the final episode of Peacock’s Bel-Air, the modern reimagining of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Smith appeared alongside Jabari Banks, who plays Will, and offered advice to the young character as he prepared to return to Philadelphia for college.

With Supermax, Smith is now returning to a major movie role—and this time, he is heading into a dangerous prison mystery.

Supermax will stream exclusively on Prime Video worldwide.
