Julie Andrews Wins Another Emmy for Her Role as Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton

Julie Andrews has added another Emmy Award to her remarkable career, this time for her beloved voice role as Lady Whistledown in Netflix’s hit series Bridgerton.

The 90-year-old actress won Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance at the 2026 Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday, Sept. 6, in Los Angeles. Andrews was not at the ceremony, held at the Peacock Theatre, so presenter Eric Bauza accepted the award on her behalf.

Andrews beat out a strong group of nominees, including Pamela Adlon for King of the Hill, Hank Azaria for The Simpsons, Trey Parker for South Park, Matt Vogel for The Muppet Show and Steven Yeun for Invincible.

This is Andrews’ second consecutive Emmy win for playing the mysterious and sharp-tongued Lady Whistledown. The role has brought her three earlier nominations before her first win last year.

After Andrews’ 2025 victory, Bridgerton creator Shonda Rhimes praised the legendary actress on Instagram.

“I have such fond memories with Ms. Andrews, and I’ve seen every one of her films!” Rhimes wrote. “Truly, I can watch her read a phone book, she’s that phenomenal. I’m so grateful she brought her magic to Bridgerton!”

Andrews steps away from on-screen acting

The latest Emmy comes as Andrews has made it clear that she is no longer interested in returning to regular on-screen acting.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in August, Andrews said she will not appear in the upcoming Princess Diaries sequel. She explained that she feels she has moved beyond acting on camera.

“I think the absolute truth is that I think I’m really past all that now,” Andrews said.

However, the star of Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music stressed that she has not completely retired. Instead, she has turned her attention to writing, podcasts and voice work.

“It’s a different kind of work that I do these days — [writing] books, and I do a lot of recording of podcasts and voiceovers,” she said.

Andrews added that she still enjoys working, but prefers projects that do not require her to appear on camera.

A legendary career continues

Even after stepping away from screen acting, Andrews continues to find new ways to connect with audiences.

She will be featured in an upcoming documentary about her life and career, which is scheduled to stream on Disney+ in 2027. The film is being directed by R.J. Cutler, whose previous documentary Martha explored the life and career of Martha Stewart.

Cutler said working with Andrews was an unforgettable experience.

“To sit with Julie, to be allowed into her inner world, to watch her reflect on a life that has shaped so many other lives was an experience I will forever cherish,” he said in a statement in July.

For now, Andrews’ unmistakable voice continues to be heard in Bridgerton, where Lady Whistledown remains one of the show’s most important and entertaining characters.

Bridgerton is currently streaming on Netflix.
