Meghan Trainor’s One Shoutout Changed Carolyn Miller’s Life and Launched Her Country Music Career

Country singer Carolyn Miller says one unexpected social media shoutout from Meghan Trainor helped change the course of her life and set her on the path to a career in music.

Miller, 37, recently shared the story during an appearance on The Dory Jackson Interview series. The New York native said she always dreamed of working in show business, but she originally believed acting—not singing—would be her career.

After graduating from college, Miller began uploading song covers to YouTube while auditioning for acting roles. At first, she said, the videos were simply a way to stay busy.

“For the first time in my life … I didn’t have school during the day and then auditions or filming or rehearsals or whatever at night,” Miller recalled.

With plenty of free time on her hands, Miller turned to YouTube and started posting covers. She quickly discovered that she enjoyed having creative control over her music.

Then something unexpected happened: people began following her.

“I unintentionally and organically started building a fan base,” Miller said. Soon, viewers were asking when she would release original songs.

At the time, Miller found the idea surprising.

“I’m an actress from New York! People give me scripts!” she joked.

Although she was flattered by the growing interest in her singing, Miller said she never considered herself a professional musician.

That changed in 2018 when she posted a cover of a Meghan Trainor song.

Miller tagged Trainor in the post, and Trainor responded by resharing the video with her own followers. According to Miller, Trainor encouraged people to follow her, writing something along the lines of, “Everyone, follow Carolyn Miller — this girl can sing.”

The impact was immediate.

Miller said she woke up the next morning to find that she had gained about 3,000 Facebook followers.

“Oh my God,” she remembered thinking.

The sudden attention made Miller realize that music could be more than a hobby. She began taking the possibility of a music career seriously.

“I’m loving what this world is. I don’t know a damn thing about it, but like, let’s see what’s behind door number three,” she recalled.

Miller then began learning everything she could about the music business, with a particular focus on country music, her favorite genre.

She started making trips to Nashville and talking to as many people in the industry as possible. She even attended music events alone so she could quietly observe how performers handled their shows.

“I would take notes on my phone,” she said, studying everything from how artists opened their sets to when they switched from upbeat songs to ballads and how they interacted with the audience.

Rather than seeing her career take off overnight, Miller described the process as building something “brick by brick” and “month by month.”

Years later, she says she still sees Trainor’s 2018 post as a pivotal moment.

“It was years ago, but it was enough for me to now all of a sudden have a little fan base,” Miller said. She described the experience as a “wink” from the universe telling her to keep going.

Miller has since established herself in the country music world. She was featured by CMT as a “Next Up Now” artist and was named an “One to Watch” by the Nashville Songwriters Association International.

Her journey is a reminder that major career changes do not always begin with a carefully made plan. For Miller, it started with a few YouTube covers, an unexpected audience and one supportive message from a fellow singer.
