Reiner won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance on the hit FX series. The award came months after the actor and his wife, Michele Reiner, were found murdered at their Los Angeles home in December.
Their son, Nick Reiner, has been charged in connection with the killings and has pleaded not guilty.
Presenter Wendi McLendon-Covey accepted the emotional moment on behalf of Reiner and asked the audience to stand and honor the late actor.
“It’s appropriate to stand for this one,” McLendon-Covey said as the audience gave Reiner a standing ovation. “I know we all wish Rob could be here tonight.”
Gilpin won Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance in Apple TV+'s Widow’s Bay. Her acceptance speech quickly became one of the memorable moments of the evening. Rather than giving a traditional speech, Gilpin delivered her remarks in the form of a poem.
She also gave a special shoutout to her date for the evening, former GLOW co-star Alison Brie.
Other guest acting winners
The other two guest acting awards were presented earlier in the ceremony.
Shailene Woodley won Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her role in Paradise, giving the series its first Emmy win.
Ernest Harden Jr. won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in The Pitt.
Creative Arts Emmys continue
The Creative Arts Emmys are held over two days, generally about a week before the main Primetime Emmy Awards. This year, the ceremony included five categories that had previously been presented during the Primetime broadcast, including the awards for supporting actor and actress in a limited or anthology series.
Sunday’s ceremony was not broadcast live. The Saturday and Sunday ceremonies will instead be combined and aired on Saturday, Sept. 12.
The 78th Emmy Awards will follow on Sept. 14, with Mariska Hargitay serving as host. The main ceremony will air live on NBC.
