Davis was sentenced on October 13 by Judge Carli Kierny, weeks after being found guilty of first-degree murder for his role in the September 1996 shooting that claimed the life of the iconic hip-hop artist.
“You don’t get to take a man from his family,” Judge Kierny said before announcing the sentence. “Especially when that man is Tupac Shakur.” She added that it had taken nearly 30 years for justice to be served.
According to reports, Davis received 731 days of credit for time already served. However, the sentence means he will not be eligible for parole until he is at least 100 years old. His attorney has indicated plans to appeal the conviction.
Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, was arrested outside his home on September 29, 2023, nearly 27 years after Shakur was shot on the Las Vegas Strip. Prosecutors argued that Davis orchestrated the attack in retaliation for a confrontation between his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, and members of Shakur’s entourage.
Shakur, best known for hits such as California Love and Hit ’Em Up, was riding in a BMW with Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight when he was repeatedly shot on September 7, 1996. He died from his injuries several days later at the age of 25.
A key piece of evidence in the prosecution’s case was Davis’ 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend, in which he discussed the events surrounding the shooting. While the defense argued that parts of the book were fictional and disputed the accuracy of certain details, prosecutors maintained that Davis’ own descriptions amounted to an admission of guilt.
The verdict marks a significant development in one of hip-hop’s most enduring murder cases, which remained unresolved for decades.
Following Davis’ arrest in 2023, Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, described the development as a pivotal moment for the family and the wider community. She stressed that her brother’s life and death deserved recognition and accountability, while reserving judgment until the legal proceedings were complete.
Close friend Jada Pinkett Smith also welcomed the possibility of answers and closure, saying she hoped justice would finally be served.
Nearly 30 years after his death, Tupac Shakur’s influence on music and culture remains immense. Davis’ sentencing represents a major milestone in the long pursuit of accountability for the loss of a rap legend whose legacy continues to resonate worldwide.
