Anthony Head, ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and ‘Ted Lasso’ Star, Dies at 72

British actor Anthony Head, best known for his memorable roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ted Lasso, Merlin, and Little Britain, has died at the age of 72.

According to a statement released by his daughters, Emily and Daisy Head, the actor passed away peacefully after complications from pneumonia while surrounded by family.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our extraordinary father,” the sisters said. “It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many.”

They added that their father loved acting and always considered himself fortunate to spend his life doing what he loved. The family also noted that his legacy would continue through the many television shows, films, and stage productions that made him a beloved figure to audiences around the world.

A Career Spanning Nearly Five Decades

Born Anthony Stewart Head on February 20, 1954, in Camden Town, north London, Head grew up in an artistic household. His father, Seafield Head, was a documentary filmmaker and producer, while his mother, Helen Shingler, was a respected actress. His older brother, Murray Head, also became a successful actor and singer.

Head began acting in the late 1970s, appearing in British television series such as Enemy at the Door, Bergerac, and Boon. However, his first major breakthrough came through a series of hugely popular Nescafé Gold Blend coffee advertisements that aired between 1987 and 1993.

The commercials, which featured Head opposite actress Sharon Maughan, followed a slow-building romance that captured the public’s imagination. The campaign became a cultural phenomenon in the United Kingdom and turned Head into a household name.

Global Fame as Rupert Giles

Head achieved international recognition in 1997 when he was cast as Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. As the wise librarian and mentor known as Buffy Summers’ “Watcher,” Head became one of the show's most beloved characters.

His portrayal combined intelligence, dry humor, warmth, and hidden darkness, making Giles a fan favorite throughout the series’ seven-season run. Head remained closely associated with the role for decades and returned to the character in the 2023 audio series Slayers: A Buffyverse Story.

For many viewers, Giles remains the defining role of Head’s career.

Success Across Television

Following his success in the United States, Head returned to Britain and became a familiar face across television.

He appeared as the Prime Minister in the comedy sketch series Little Britain, showcasing his talent for comedy. In 2006, he played the villainous Mr. Finch in the popular Doctor Who episode “School Reunion.”

From 2008 to 2012, he portrayed King Uther Pendragon in the BBC fantasy drama Merlin, earning praise for his commanding performance as Arthur’s strict and anti-magic father.

Head continued to work steadily in television throughout the following decade, appearing in productions such as Dominion, The Stranger, Motherland, Silent Witness, The Archers, and Bridgerton.

Winning Over a New Generation in Ted Lasso

In recent years, Head introduced himself to a new generation of viewers through Apple TV+’s hit comedy-drama Ted Lasso.

He played Rupert Mannion, the wealthy and manipulative ex-husband of Rebecca Welton. The character served as one of the show’s primary antagonists, and Head’s performance was widely praised for balancing charm with cruelty.

The role demonstrated his remarkable range and reminded audiences of his ability to dominate scenes decades into his career.

Accomplished Stage Performer and Singer

Although best known for screen acting, Head also enjoyed a distinguished career in musical theater and music.

He appeared in productions of Godspell, Chess, and The Rocky Horror Show, where his portrayal of Dr. Frank-N-Furter became particularly celebrated. His performance of “Sweet Transvestite” was later released as a single.

His musical talents were also highlighted in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, especially during the acclaimed musical episode “Once More, with Feeling,” where he performed several songs that showcased his rich baritone voice.

Head later released music outside of acting projects, including the albums Music for Elevators (2002) and Staring at the Sun (2014).

Film Work

Throughout his career, Head also appeared in numerous films.

His notable credits included Repo! The Genetic Opera, The Iron Lady, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, and Upgraded.

Whether playing heroes, villains, authority figures, or eccentric characters, Head earned a reputation as a versatile performer capable of moving between drama, fantasy, comedy, and musical projects with ease.

Family and Personal Life

Away from the spotlight, Head lived a relatively private life in Bath, Somerset, with his longtime partner Sarah Fisher. The couple had been together since 1982 and shared two daughters, Emily and Daisy, both of whom became successful actresses.

Emily Head is known for roles in The Inbetweeners and Emmerdale, while Daisy Head has appeared in Shadow and Bone, Harlots, and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

The family has endured a particularly difficult period. Fisher, a respected animal welfare advocate who operated a rescue sanctuary for horses, ponies, and donkeys, died unexpectedly in December 2025 at the age of 61.

Anthony Head leaves behind a remarkable body of work that spans television, film, theater, and music. From the beloved mentor Rupert Giles to the scheming Rupert Mannion, he created characters that resonated with audiences across generations.

His daughters said their grief is immense, but they take comfort in knowing that his work will continue to inspire and entertain people for years to come.
