Dua Lipa and Callum Turner’s Sicily Wedding Sparks Protests as Three-Day Celebration Comes to an End

Pop superstar Dua Lipa and actor Callum Turner have found themselves at the center of controversy as their lavish wedding celebrations in Palermo, Sicily, sparked protests from local residents who say the event disrupted daily life and restricted access to public spaces.

The couple, who officially married in a private civil ceremony in London on May 31, 2026, spent the following weekend hosting a star-studded three-day wedding celebration in Italy. While the festivities attracted some of the biggest names in music, fashion and film, they also triggered frustration among many people living in the historic Sicilian city.

Locals Object to Wedding Restrictions

The backlash began after authorities introduced extensive security measures around several key locations in Palermo where wedding events were scheduled to take place.

Police barricades and security checkpoints were set up around public squares including Piazza Sant'Anna and Piazza Croce dei Vespri. Access to some pedestrian areas and nearby attractions was restricted throughout the wedding weekend.

Residents also reported road closures, parking difficulties and increased security presence across parts of the city center. According to local media reports, no-drone zones were established and some residents near event locations were allegedly asked to sign non-disclosure agreements to prevent information from leaking to the press.

Many locals felt the measures went too far.

Concetta Chillemi, a shop owner in Palermo, told The Guardian that the city had started to feel like a "theme park" because of the wedding activities.

Another local business owner, identified as Clarissa, said residents faced significant inconvenience.

"For example, for three days we've been forced to park miles away and walk to work," she said. "It's not right to block the city – I could understand if it was for the pope, but not for a singer."

Protest Signs Appear Across Palermo

In response to the restrictions, residents and activists launched visible protests throughout the city center.

Posters written in both Italian and English appeared on walls, storefronts and public spaces. Several slogans quickly became symbols of the opposition.

Among the messages displayed were:

• "Palermo is not for rent"

• "Our square is not your living room"

• "Palermo is not for the rich"

According to reports, some of the original posters were removed by wedding organizers or city workers. Protesters then reportedly responded by painting similar messages directly onto walls as graffiti.

Anti-tourism groups and community organizations also encouraged residents to participate in symbolic demonstrations highlighting concerns about the commercialization of public spaces.

Why the Wedding Drew Attention

The wedding celebration reportedly cost around €1.5 million ($1.7 million) and attracted approximately 200 guests from the entertainment and fashion industries.

The guest list reportedly included:

• Elton John

• Charli XCX

• George Daniel

• Kevin Parker

• Donatella Versace

• Mark Ronson

Elton John was also reported to have performed a special set during the celebrations.

Guests stayed at Palermo's luxury Villa Igiea hotel, while various events were hosted at historic venues throughout the region.

A cocktail reception took place at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, while the main celebration was held at the 18th-century Villa Valguarnera in nearby Bagheria.

Officials Defend the Event

Despite the criticism, local officials defended their decision to allow the wedding festivities to proceed.

Supporters argued that hosting an international celebrity event brought valuable tourism exposure and economic benefits to Palermo.

Reports indicate that organizers paid local authorities approximately €13,000 to secure use of certain public areas connected to the celebrations.

Some reports also suggested that Dua Lipa's team offered financial compensation to residents affected by the disruptions, although details surrounding those claims have not been independently confirmed.
