The 29-year-old gymnast shared the news with fans on June 6 through a series of Instagram Stories, describing the incident as one of the most frightening experiences she has ever faced.
Biles Says She “Almost Died”
Biles posted a photo showing her arm covered with hospital wristbands and explained that she had been resting for most of the week following the medical emergency.
"I'm not one to normally share things like this because I value privacy in today's age," Biles wrote. "But almost dying wasn't on my bingo card earlier this week."
She did not reveal the exact nature of the health issue but made it clear that the situation was extremely serious.
"This was one of, if not the scariest experience of my life," she added.
The seven-time Olympic gold medalist also thanked her close friends and family members who supported her during the difficult period.
"I've been in bed resting this week. I'll explain sooner or later but shoutout to my close circle who reached out, checked in, visited and sent flowers," she wrote.
Recovering at Home
In additional posts, Biles shared photos of flower arrangements sent by loved ones as she continues to recover at home.
One image showed her resting in bed with her two dogs nearby. She also shared a screenshot displaying a resting heart rate of 126 beats per minute, though she did not explain whether it was related to the medical emergency.
The gymnast reassured followers that she is focused on healing and taking things slowly.
Husband Jonathan Owens Was Away
The health scare occurred while Biles' husband, NFL player Jonathan Owens, was in Indianapolis attending team practices.
Owens signed a one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts in March 2026. At the time, Biles expressed excitement about spending part of the football season in Indiana with him.
Because Owens was away during the emergency, Biles relied heavily on her support network of friends and family.
Signs of Recovery Before the Announcement
Just days before revealing the hospitalization, Biles had shared updates from her custom-built Texas home.
One post showed her enjoying breakfast in bed with the caption, "Breakfast in bed. Just what the doctor ordered."
Another featured a video of Biles performing flips and gymnastics skills on a large backyard trampoline alongside fellow gymnast Zoe Miller.
The video showed Biles appearing energetic and active, making her later revelation about the medical emergency even more surprising to fans.
Medical Details Remain Private
At this time, Biles has not disclosed what caused the health scare, whether she underwent any medical procedures, or how long her recovery is expected to take.
She told followers that she plans to share more information in the future once she feels ready.
For now, the focus remains on rest and recovery.
A Reminder of the Challenges Elite Athletes Face
Although Biles is known worldwide for her extraordinary athletic achievements, she has also been open about the physical and mental challenges that come with competing at the highest level.
In recent years, she has spoken publicly about prioritizing her health and well-being, most notably during the Tokyo Olympics when she withdrew from several events after experiencing the "twisties," a dangerous loss of spatial awareness that can put gymnasts at serious risk of injury.
Her latest health scare serves as another reminder that even elite athletes can face unexpected medical challenges.
Looking Ahead
Biles' future plans remain uncertain until more is known about her condition and recovery timeline. Several major gymnastics events, including the 2026 U.S. Classic and the Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships, are scheduled later this summer.
Whether she returns to training or competition in the coming months will depend on her health and guidance from her medical team.
For now, fans around the world are wishing the gymnastics icon a full and speedy recovery as she continues to heal from what she described as a near-death experience.
