Jason Momoa Exits ‘Helldivers’ Movie as Sony Moves Forward With Video Game Adaptation

Jason Momoa is no longer attached to star in Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions’ upcoming live-action adaptation of Helldivers, marking a significant change for one of the most anticipated video game movies currently in development.

The Aquaman and Dune star had previously been linked to the project and was expected to lead the cast. However, according to industry reports, Momoa has quietly departed the film, leaving Sony searching for a new leading actor as production plans continue.

Despite the casting shakeup, the movie remains on track for its planned theatrical release on November 10, 2027.

‘Helldivers’ Movie Still Moving Ahead

Sony officially announced the Helldivers film adaptation as part of its expanding slate of PlayStation-based movies. The project is based on Arrowhead Game Studios’ hugely successful cooperative shooter franchise, which exploded in popularity following the release of Helldivers 2.

The games place players in the role of elite soldiers known as Helldivers, members of a military force tasked with defending “Super Earth” from a variety of deadly alien threats across the galaxy.

According to the game’s official description, Helldivers must work together to protect humanity and eliminate enemies in a relentless interstellar war. The franchise has become known for its chaotic action, teamwork-focused gameplay, and sharp satire of militarism and propaganda.

While specific plot details for the movie have not been revealed, fans expect the adaptation to stay faithful to the game’s core premise, following a squad of soldiers battling hostile alien species such as the insect-like Terminids and the robotic Automatons.

Justin Lin Directing the Adaptation

One of the biggest names attached to the project is director Justin Lin.

Lin, best known for helping turn the Fast & Furious franchise into a global blockbuster series, is set to direct and produce the film through his company, Perfect Storm Entertainment. His previous credits also include Star Trek Beyond, giving him experience with both large-scale action and science-fiction storytelling.

The screenplay was written by Gary Dauberman, whose resume includes major horror hits such as It, Annabelle, and The Nun. While Dauberman is primarily known for horror, his involvement suggests Sony is aiming to balance intense action with suspenseful and high-stakes moments.

Producing alongside Lin are veteran producer Hutch Parker and PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash. Arrowhead Game Studios is also involved in a consulting capacity to help ensure the movie remains connected to the game’s established universe.

Why Jason Momoa Left

Although neither Sony nor Momoa has publicly detailed the reasons behind his departure, reports indicate scheduling conflicts played a major role.

Momoa’s calendar has become increasingly crowded with major studio projects, many of which are already filming or preparing for production. With several blockbuster franchises competing for his time, fitting Helldivers into his schedule reportedly became difficult.

The departure does not appear to be connected to creative disagreements or issues with the project itself. Industry insiders continue to describe the film as an active priority for Sony and PlayStation Productions.

The studio is now expected to begin searching for a replacement lead as it prepares to move closer to production.

Momoa’s Busy Upcoming Schedule

Momoa remains one of Hollywood’s most in-demand action stars, with multiple high-profile projects lined up over the next several years.

‘Supergirl’ (2026)

One of Momoa’s most anticipated upcoming roles is his debut in the new DC Universe as Lobo.

The actor has long expressed interest in playing the comic-book antihero, and he is officially set to appear in Supergirl, scheduled for release on June 26, 2026. The character is known as an intergalactic bounty hunter with a larger-than-life personality, making the role a natural fit for Momoa.

‘Dune: Part Three’

Momoa is also returning to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune saga.

Despite Duncan Idaho’s death in the first film, the actor is expected to return as Hayt, a resurrected clone known as a Ghola, following the events of Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah.

The role marks another major chapter in one of modern cinema’s biggest science-fiction franchises.

‘Street Fighter’ (2026)

Momoa is also attached to the live-action Street Fighter reboot.

He is expected to play Blanka, one of the video game series’ most recognizable characters. The adaptation is being developed by Legendary Entertainment and Paramount Pictures.

‘A Minecraft Movie: Squared’ (2027)

Following the success of the first Minecraft film, Momoa is currently involved in the sequel, A Minecraft Movie: Squared.

He will reprise his role as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison and is also serving as a producer on the project.

Additional Projects

Beyond those major franchises, Momoa is attached to several other productions, including the R-rated live-action/animation comedy Animal Friends, where he voices an animated bear alongside a star-studded cast.

He is also starring in and producing the action-thriller Protecting Jared, which is currently in post-production.

Meanwhile, fans continue to expect his eventual return as Dante Reyes in the next installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, which will resolve the cliffhanger ending introduced in Fast X.

What’s Next for ‘Helldivers’?

For now, the biggest question surrounding Helldivers is who will replace Momoa in the lead role.

Sony has not announced any casting decisions, but with a major director, an established screenwriter, and the backing of PlayStation Productions, the film remains one of the studio’s most significant gaming adaptations.

As production continues, fans will be watching closely to see whether the movie can successfully capture the franchise’s unique blend of explosive action, dark humor, and satirical commentary that helped make Helldivers a global phenomenon.

With a release date set for November 10, 2027, there is still plenty of time for Sony to assemble its cast and bring the battle for Super Earth to the big screen.
