Mika Abdalla and Jake Short Address Viral Podcast Controversy After Confirming Split

Actress Mika Abdalla and actor Jake Short are speaking out after a resurfaced podcast clip sparked widespread online debate following the end of their relationship.

The former couple, who recently confirmed they had ended their engagement and five-year romance, released a joint statement to Us Weekly addressing the viral reaction to a 2024 podcast appearance that many social media users criticized.

“We've seen a conversation around clips of us together when we were in a relationship, and people making harmful and inaccurate assumptions about our dynamic,” Abdalla, 26, and Short, 29, said in the statement.

The pair added that they “were in a loving, respectful relationship for five years” and said it was “hurtful to see playful moments dissected in a way that does not reflect the respect and love we had and still have for each other.”

Viral Podcast Clip Draws Criticism

The controversy centers on a clip from a 2024 episode of The Sit and Chat podcast, which is co-hosted by Short’s longtime friend and former Disney Channel co-star Bradley Steven Perry.

In the clip, Short was asked to describe his then-fiancée in two words. He responded with a joke that referred to Abdalla as “some bitch,” a remark that recently resurfaced online after news of the couple’s breakup became public.

The clip quickly gained traction on TikTok and X, formerly Twitter, where many viewers criticized the comment as disrespectful and interpreted it as evidence of a problematic relationship dynamic.

As speculation intensified, some fans linked the clip to the couple’s breakup and celebrated Abdalla’s decision to move on, especially as her career continues to rise following the success of Amazon Prime Video’s Off Campus.

However, Abdalla and Short have strongly rejected those interpretations, saying the clip did not accurately represent their relationship.

Split Confirmed After Five Years Together

The joint statement comes days after Us Weekly reported that Abdalla and Short had ended their engagement and gone their separate ways.

A representative for Abdalla confirmed the breakup in a statement, saying:

“Because of the immense curiosity about Mika’s personal life and in light of numerous erroneous reports, I can clarify that Mika and Jake are no longer in a relationship.”

The representative added that the former couple continues “to support each other as friends” and requested privacy during the transition.

No official reason for the split has been disclosed. While online rumors suggested that Abdalla’s increasingly busy work schedule may have contributed to the breakup, sources close to the situation have denied those claims, saying the two simply grew apart while remaining on good terms.

Relationship Timeline

Abdalla and Short first met while working on the Hulu teen comedy film Sex Appeal, which was filmed in 2021 and released in 2022.

Their on-screen friendship eventually turned into a real-life romance, and the couple quietly began dating after production wrapped.

Over the next several years, they maintained a relatively private relationship while occasionally sharing photos together on social media and appearing at industry events.

In May 2025, news of their engagement became public when Short’s longtime manager, Brian Medavoy, posted a congratulatory message on Instagram celebrating the couple’s next chapter.

The engagement appeared to mark a major milestone in their relationship, but by late 2025 the pair had become less visible on each other’s social media accounts. Abdalla’s last appearance featuring Short on her main Instagram feed reportedly came in November 2025.

Busy Careers and New Opportunities

Both actors have experienced significant professional growth in recent years.

Abdalla’s profile rose dramatically after landing the role of Allie Hayes in Amazon Prime Video’s hit romance series Off Campus. The adaptation of Elle Kennedy’s popular book universe became a major streaming success and secured an early second-season renewal.

In addition to Off Campus, Abdalla has also joined NBC’s Suits LA and the upcoming Max medical drama The Pitt.

Meanwhile, Short continues to build his career beyond his Disney Channel roots. He recently appeared in guest roles on 9-1-1 and High Potential while also co-hosting the Hit the Brake podcast alongside Perry.

No New Relationships

Despite ongoing fan speculation, neither Abdalla nor Short has been publicly linked to a new romantic partner since their breakup.

Some viewers have speculated about a possible off-screen romance between Abdalla and her Off Campus co-star Stephen Kalyn due to their on-screen chemistry. However, reports indicate that Kalyn is in a long-term committed relationship, and the two actors are simply friends and colleagues.

Short has also kept his personal life private and has not been connected to anyone new since the split.

For now, both actors appear focused on their careers while maintaining a supportive friendship following the end of their engagement. Their recent joint statement suggests that, despite the breakup and the online controversy, they remain united in rejecting narratives that they say misrepresent the relationship they shared for five years.
