James Handy Murder Case: Girlfriend’s Son Charged After Veteran Actor Fatally Stabbed in Los Angeles

Veteran actor James Handy, known for a career spanning more than five decades in film and television, was fatally stabbed in Los Angeles, and authorities have now formally charged the son of Handy’s longtime girlfriend with murder.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced on June 5 that 44-year-old Michael Gledhill has been charged with one count of murder in connection with Handy’s death. Prosecutors also filed a special allegation that Gledhill personally used a deadly weapon, a knife, during the attack.

If convicted, Gledhill faces a potential sentence of 26 years to life in state prison.

District Attorney Nathan Hochman condemned the killing in a statement, saying, “This is not how anyone’s life should end, stabbed in the chest and left dying in the front yard of a home. The victim deserved to live out his later years enjoying what he had worked so hard for and enjoying it with those he loved and cared about.”

Fatal Stabbing in Tarzana

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to a report of “unknown trouble” at a residence on the 19200 block of Erwin Street in the Tarzana neighborhood at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3.

Police said a 911 caller allegedly told dispatchers, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”

When officers arrived, they found Handy unconscious in the front yard suffering from multiple stab wounds to the chest. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities later identified the victim as Handy, who was 81 years old.

Suspect Arrested at Scene

Investigators identified Michael Gledhill as the suspect. According to police, Gledhill is the son of Handy’s longtime girlfriend, Wendy Gledhill.

Authorities said Gledhill lived on the property in a converted garage apartment. Handy reportedly maintained a separate residence but was visiting Wendy Gledhill’s home when the attack occurred.

Police said Gledhill approached responding officers at the scene and indicated that he was the person they were looking for. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Van Nuys Jail.

His bail has been set at approximately $2 million.

Mental Health Concerns Raised

The suspect’s mother told media outlets that her son had been diagnosed with schizophrenia in July 2025 and had been prescribed medication to manage the condition.

According to her account, she recently learned that he had stopped taking his medication about a week before the stabbing.

Friends of Handy also reportedly said the actor had mentioned concerns about Gledhill’s mental health struggles over the past several years.

Authorities have not publicly identified a motive for the killing. Investigators have described the incident as an isolated domestic matter and said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Court Proceedings Delayed

Gledhill was scheduled to be arraigned on June 5 at the Van Nuys Courthouse, but the hearing did not proceed as planned.

His public defender informed the court that Gledhill was currently unable to assist in his own defense. As a result, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge John H. Reid ordered that the case be transferred to mental health court for further evaluation.

Gledhill is expected to undergo psychological examinations to determine whether he is legally competent to stand trial. A mental health court judge will review those findings before criminal proceedings move forward.

Wendy Gledhill Speaks Out

Wendy Gledhill, 76, has expressed grief over both Handy’s death and the allegations against her son.

In comments to media outlets, she said she was struggling to come to terms with what happened.

“I loved James and my son,” she said. “I still can’t believe it. I can’t believe my son did it.”

She also offered condolences to Handy’s family, saying she was deeply sorry for the tragedy.
