Selena Gomez Denies Shading Taylor Swift After Viral Knicks Game Comment: “I Would Never Insult My Friends”

Selena Gomez has addressed online speculation that she was criticizing longtime friend Taylor Swift after a comment on a social media post about Swift's appearance at the NBA Finals sparked debate among fans.

The singer and actress clarified that her remark was not directed at Swift and said the reaction had been widely misunderstood.

According to Gomez, the controversy began after she commented “lol” on an MTV Instagram post featuring Swift and actress Mariska Hargitay celebrating the New York Knicks' dramatic victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on June 10.

After receiving messages about the comment, Gomez took to Instagram Stories to explain her intentions.

“Woke up and was sent so many texts,” Gomez wrote. “I would never insult my friends nor was it an insult.”

She said the comment was simply a reaction to one of the photos in the post, which showed Swift cheering while Hargitay appeared overwhelmed during the game.

Gomez also explained that she had been involved in a friendly sports bet with friends and that some of her posts were connected to that ongoing joke.

“I lost but was poking at my opponents, my friends,” she wrote. “Believe it or not I do have other friends in my life.”

She concluded her statement by reminding followers not to overanalyze the situation.

“Also… it's a basketball game,” Gomez added.

Knicks Victory Sparks Online Speculation

The clarification came shortly after Gomez congratulated the Knicks on their 107-106 comeback victory over the Spurs. The Knicks had trailed by 29 points before mounting a historic comeback.

In an Instagram Stories post, Gomez praised the team's performance and wrote, “Mad respect for the game!! Congrats to the peeps that represent! What a come back.”

She also joked about people suddenly supporting the team, writing, “So funny how some are all the sudden fans though lol.”

Some social media users interpreted the remark as a reference to celebrities attending the game, including Swift. Gomez's latest statement was intended to put those rumors to rest.

Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift's Long Friendship

Gomez and Swift have been close friends since 2008, when Gomez was dating Nick Jonas and Swift was dating Joe Jonas.

“We actually dated the Jonas Brothers together! It was hysterical,” Gomez recalled during a 2017 interview with KISS FM UK.

Over the years, the pair have frequently supported each other's careers and personal milestones. Gomez has appeared as a surprise guest on several of Swift's tours, while Swift has publicly celebrated Gomez's music releases and achievements.

In a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone, Gomez described Swift as her closest friend in the entertainment industry.

“My only friend in the industry really is Taylor,” Gomez said at the time.

Their friendship has remained highly visible in recent years, with both stars regularly sharing messages of support on social media and attending major events in each other's lives.

Gomez Quickly Shuts Down Taylor Swift Rumors

The latest incident highlights how closely fans follow the relationship between the two global stars. However, Gomez made it clear that there is no conflict between them.

Her message left little room for interpretation: the comments were connected to a basketball bet among friends, not criticism of Swift.

With her clarification, Gomez has effectively ended speculation that she was throwing shade at one of her longest and most famous friends.
