Christopher Nolan Reveals Why He Doesn't Own a Smartphone

Christopher Nolan says he has no plans to get a smartphone because he worries it would distract him and reduce the quiet time he uses to think about new ideas.

Speaking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the Oscar-winning director said he only uses a flip phone when traveling. He said he values moments spent thinking, such as looking out a window and planning his next film, and believes a smartphone would take away that time.

Nolan also confirmed that cell phones are not allowed on his movie sets. He said he is surrounded by people who keep him informed, so he does not need a phone while working.

The director also explained his unusual dislike of Ugg boots on set. He said the comfortable slippers remind him and the actors of the real world, making it harder to stay immersed in a film scene. Nolan described the rule as a running joke with actors Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt but said it helps maintain focus during filming.

Nolan's latest film, The Odyssey, is now in theaters.
