Cole Hauser says new showrunner is a positive step for Dutton Ranch

Cole Hauser says he is optimistic about the future of Dutton Ranch after Benjamin Cavell was named the show's new showrunner ahead of season 2.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Hauser, who plays Rip Wheeler, said Cavell's arrival is "a really nice next step" for the series. He added that he believes the future looks bright for the cast, including Kelly Reilly and Finn Little, and for the show overall.

Cavell replaced creator Chad Feehan, who exited the series shortly before its first season premiered. Reports have linked Feehan's departure to concerns raised by star Ed Harris, who said he felt his character, veterinarian Everett McKinney, was underused.

In interviews with Variety, Harris said he was frustrated during production and even considered leaving the show. However, he said he has been told his character will have a larger role in season 2. Harris also revealed that a scene of his singing at a local bar was cut, which added to his disappointment.

Hauser and Reilly have downplayed the leadership change, saying that changes in showrunners are common in television production and that they completed the first season with Feehan on good terms.
