Don Knotts’ Daughter Reflects on His Exit From The Andy Griffith Show

Karen Knotts has shared new details about her father Don Knotts’ decision to leave The Andy Griffith Show after five seasons, saying the move was both exciting and intimidating.

Speaking to Woman’s World, Karen said the role of Deputy Barney Fife demanded long hours and intense preparation. She recalled that her father often worked 10 to 12 hours a day and spent much of his time at home studying scripts.

Don Knotts and Andy Griffith had agreed to stay with the series for five seasons before pursuing other opportunities. Afterward, Knotts accepted a five-film contract with Universal Studios, while Griffith remained on the show for three more seasons.

Karen said her father felt enormous pressure while making The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, his first major film under the new deal. Without the support system of the television series, he was anxious about leading a project on his own.

To help with the film, Knotts brought in The Andy Griffith Show writers Jim Fritzell and Everett Greenbaum, while director Alan Rafkin, who had worked on the series, also joined the production. Karen also revealed that Andy Griffith served as a story consultant after the original script needed improvement.

Despite her father's concerns, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken became a box office success and remains one of his best-known films. Karen said its success marked an important milestone as Knotts established himself as a leading film star.
