Emmy Rossum says she limits social media use to protect her wellbeing

Actress Emmy Rossum has said she regularly limits her time on social media because she believes excessive scrolling can affect mental wellbeing.

Speaking to PEOPLE in 10, Rossum said she goes through periods of spending too much time online before taking breaks and setting limits. She added that she is considering using a Brick device, which helps reduce phone use, because she feels social media algorithms are “messing” with her brain.

Rossum said she tries to balance her digital life by spending time outdoors, including visiting a favourite bench in New York’s Central Park each day.

The Shameless star also said she is mindful of how her online habits influence her self-talk, particularly as a parent to her two young children with husband Sam Esmail. She believes spending too much time online can lead to unhealthy comparisons and negative thoughts, adding that she wants her children to learn to treat themselves with kindness.

Rossum also discussed her upcoming Hulu psychological crime drama Furious, which premieres on 27 July. She plays FBI agent Alice Black, who is investigating a female serial killer. To prepare for the role, Rossum trained with former and current FBI agents and NYPD detectives. She said working alongside female colleagues and filming in New York City were among the highlights of the project.
