Film and TV Set Designer Mary Kate Golding Dies in Apparent Domestic Violence Tragedy

A film and television set designer who worked on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Flight Attendant, Hawkeye, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith was found dead in an apparent murder-suicide in Queens, New York.

Mary Kate Golding, 34, was found with fatal stab wounds in her apartment shortly after midnight on Tuesday, according to law enforcement officials. Police believe her husband, Joseph Azzaretto, 33, killed her before fleeing the scene. About six hours later, he was found dead after apparently taking his own life in a nearby park.

The couple's 11-month-old son was found unharmed inside the apartment with his mother. Authorities said Azzaretto allegedly called one of Golding's friends to confess before leaving. The friend went to the apartment, found Golding, and took the baby to safety.

Neighbors told local media that the family had moved to Queens from Pennsylvania about two months ago. Several described Azzaretto as aggressive and said they had avoided him because of his behavior.

Azzaretto's family had previously experienced a fatal domestic violence incident. In 2020, his younger brother pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter after fatally shooting their father during a dispute involving their parents.

Golding, originally from New Hope, Pennsylvania, studied production design at New York University. She built a successful career in the entertainment industry, earning credits on several popular television series and films. Her most recent project was the Netflix documentary series Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer.
