Johnny Depp Surprises Comic-Con Fans as Ebenezer Scrooge

Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, arriving in full costume as Ebenezer Scrooge to promote Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. The gothic retelling of Charles Dickens' classic is directed by Ti West and will be released in theaters on Nov. 13 by Paramount Pictures.

Although Depp was not listed on the Comic-Con schedule, he appeared during Collider’s "Directors on Directing" panel. Wearing a top hat, carrying a cane, and covered in gray makeup and facial hair, he stayed in character when a fan greeted him as Mr. Scrooge, replying, “What’s so pleasant about it?”

A trailer for the film was released shortly after his appearance. The cast includes Andrea Riseborough, Tramell Tillman, Ian McKellen, and Rupert Grint. The movie marks Depp’s first major Hollywood studio film since Waiting for the Barbarians in 2019.
