Kyla Pratt Reflects on Early Insecurity as The Proud Family Comes to an End

Kyla Pratt says she struggled with insecurity about her voice when she first landed the role of Penny Proud in The Proud Family at age 14.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Pratt, now 39, admitted she worried she would lose the voice acting job because she disliked the way she sounded. She said she was her own "biggest critic" during the original show's run.

The Proud Family premiered on Disney Channel in 2001, aired for two seasons, and ended with The Proud Family Movie in 2005. Disney+ revived the series in 2020 as The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. The fourth and final season premieres on July 29.

Pratt said returning to voice Penny Proud has been a nostalgic experience and helps her stay connected to her younger self. She added that she appreciates the rare opportunity to continue playing a character she first portrayed as a teenager.

The revival features many returning cast members along with several guest stars, including Mariah Carey, Vanessa Williams, Chloe Bailey, Anthony Anderson, and Tiffany Haddish.
