Matthew Broderick says Ferris Bueller's haircut helped make the film 'timeless'

Matthew Broderick has reflected on his iconic role in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, saying the hairstyles he and co-star Alan Ruck had helped the 1986 comedy stand the test of time.

Speaking in an oral history of the film with The Guardian, Broderick, 64, said he wanted Ferris Bueller to appear relaxed and effortlessly cool. He added that the team also wanted to avoid making the character seem unlikeable despite always getting his own way.

Broderick joked that he and Ruck avoided trendy 1980s hairstyles because they had both recently appeared in the military play Biloxi Blues. Their short haircuts, he said, helped give the film a more timeless look, adding that mullets could have dated it.

Broderick and Ruck, who played best friends Ferris Bueller and Cameron Frye, have recently reunited for the comedy The Best Is Yet to Come. The film, directed by Jon Turteltaub and written by Allan Loeb, follows two lifelong friends on a road trip after a misunderstanding changes their lives.

Ruck recently confirmed that filming has finished and the movie is now in post-production. Reflecting on working together again nearly 40 years later, he said it felt as though they had never stopped, joking that the pair had made a pact to collaborate every four decades.
