Randolph Mantooth, ‘Emergency!’ Star and EMS Advocate, Dies at 80

Randolph Mantooth, the actor best known for playing paramedic John “Johnny” Gage on NBC’s hit 1970s drama Emergency!, has died at the age of 80.

Mantooth died on Thursday in Ventura, California, after battling several forms of cancer over the years, according to his brother, Donald.

From 1972 to 1977, Mantooth starred in every episode of Emergency!, portraying the charismatic yet romantically unlucky Johnny Gage. He later reprised the role in several Emergency! television movies and voiced the character in the animated series Emergency +4. The show's success coincided with the growth of emergency medical services across the United States, and Mantooth remained a dedicated advocate for firefighters and paramedics throughout his life.

Born Randy DeRoy Mantooth in Sacramento, California, in 1945, he studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts before launching a successful television career. Beyond Emergency!, he appeared in more than 300 episodes of the soap opera Loving and nearly 200 episodes of its spin-off The City. He also had memorable roles in As the World Turns and One Life to Live, while making guest appearances on series including Charlie’s Angels, Dallas, MacGyver, Baywatch, ER, and Criminal Minds.

His final screen appearance was in the 2013 horror film Killer Holiday. Mantooth is survived by his wife, Kristen Connors, whom he married in 2002, as well as his brother Donald and sister Tonya.
